The emotional and logistical issues that come with moving to a new town, city or state, let alone a new country are enormous. Multiply that by 4 when you are moving with your partner and children. We were lucky enough to recently work with the BBC as they filmed a documentary on emigrating families.
It made me wonder about family supports, and how many couples, once they have children, often move to be closer to family, or grandparents move to be closer to their young family. But many families don’t have the valuable support of an extended family, and it is becoming more and more of a luxury, not a given as families are dispersed across the world.
It takes so long to settle into a new city, just the though of the whole process is enough to make me feel stressed. House hunting, finding a new car, settling the children into their new schools, starting a new job and exploring your new surroundings in general to get your bearings.
Then added to this, you need time to meet new people and establish friendships. You cannot always take your children with you on these new engagements. What do you do? Stay at home?
