First Aid Tips Every Parent Should Know

Written by Lisa

As parents, ensuring the safety and well-being of our children is a top priority. At Cherished Cherubs, child safety is a fundamental priority, and all our babysitters are trained in first aid to provide the best care possible. While we hope to avoid any accidents or injuries, it’s essential to be prepared for when they do occur. Knowing basic first aid can make a significant difference in how effectively you respond to an emergency. Here are some crucial first aid tips every parent should know.

1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

The first step in any emergency is to remain calm. Take a deep breath and assess the situation. Determine the severity of the injury and whether you need to call for emergency services. Your calm demeanour will help soothe your child and enable you to think clearly.

2. Treating Cuts and Scrapes

For minor cuts and scrapes, follow these steps:

  • Clean the wound: Wash your hands thoroughly. Rinse the wound with clean water to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using hydrogen peroxide or iodine, as these can damage tissue.
  • Apply an antiseptic: Use an antiseptic cream or ointment to prevent infection.
  • Cover the wound: Place a sterile bandage or dressing over the wound to keep it clean.
  • Watch for infection: Keep an eye on the wound for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or pus. If any of these occur, seek medical attention.

For more severe cuts that won’t stop bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth and seek medical help immediately.

3. Dealing with Burns

Burns can be painful and require prompt attention:

  • Cool the burn: Hold the affected area under cool running water for at least 10 minutes. Do not use ice, as it can cause further damage.
  • Protect the burn: Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick dressing or cloth.
  • Pain relief: Administer an age-appropriate pain reliever, such as paracetamol, if needed.
  • Seek medical advice: For burns that blister, cover a large area, or involve the face, hands, feet, or genitals, seek medical attention.

4. Managing Choking

Choking is a common hazard, especially for young children. If your child is choking and can’t breathe, cough, or speak:

  • Infants under one year:
    • Place the infant face down on your forearm, supporting their head.
    • Give up to five back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
    • If the object doesn’t dislodge, turn the infant face-up and give up to five chest thrusts using two fingers.
  • Children over one year:
    • Perform the Heimlich manoeuvre: Stand behind the child, place your hands around their waist, and give quick, upward thrusts above the navel.

If the child becomes unconscious, start CPR and call emergency services.

5. Handling Sprains and Strains

For sprains and strains, remember the R.I.C.E method:

  • Rest: Keep the injured area still and avoid putting weight on it.
  • Ice: Apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the injury for 20 minutes every hour.
  • Compression: Use an elastic bandage to reduce swelling.
  • Elevation: Raise the injured area above heart level to decrease swelling.

6. Recognising and Treating Poisoning

If you suspect your child has ingested a poisonous substance, do not induce vomiting. Instead, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 in Australia immediately. Provide as much information as possible about the substance and follow their instructions.

7. Knowing When to Seek Professional Help

While many minor injuries can be treated at home, certain situations require professional medical attention. Seek help if your child:

  • Has difficulty breathing
  • Is unconscious or has a seizure
  • Shows signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling, hives, difficulty breathing)
  • Has a deep or large wound
  • Has ingested a poisonous substance
